Our History
A Legacy of Leadership and Unity
Founded in 1918, the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters (OAPFF) has played a defining role in the history of the fire service. Established in the same year as the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the OAPFF became the first state association affiliated with the IAFF—setting a national example for unity, collaboration, and leadership.
For more than a century, the OAPFF has remained dedicated to protecting and advancing the interests of Ohio's professional firefighters and paramedics. Through the strength of its affiliated locals, the Association has championed collective bargaining rights, improved workplace safety, protected pensions, strengthened workers' compensation, and advocated for legislation that supports firefighters, EMS professionals, and their families.
While the fire service has evolved to meet new challenges, the OAPFF's mission has remained constant: to unite Ohio's professional firefighters through strong representation, unwavering advocacy, and a shared commitment to service. Today, that legacy continues as we work together to strengthen our profession and serve the communities that depend on us.
